Engagement & Proposal Sailing · San Diego
on the Water
Private engagement & proposal sails on San Diego Bay — flowers, champagne, and a moment we help you plan down to the timing.
Before the Question
Sterling Sails has helped make dozens of proposals happen on San Diego Bay. We know how to set the scene, coordinate the timing, and give you the space to make the moment exactly what you want it to be.
A private sailing charter offers something most proposal settings can’t — complete privacy, a genuinely stunning backdrop, and no outside noise or distractions. It’s just the two of you, on a 42-foot yacht, with the bay to yourselves.

Plan the Moment

Point Loma Lighthouse
“the lighthouse behind you and open ocean ahead”
Why San Diego Bay Is One of the Best Places to Propose
San Diego Bay offers a combination of scenery and privacy that’s difficult to match in a land-based setting. From the water, you have clear views of the Coronado Bridge, the downtown skyline, and Point Loma Lighthouse — and if your charter is timed to sunset, the natural lighting adds to the setting without any extra effort.
Because Sterling Sails charters are fully private, there are no other guests on board. No restaurant noise, no other couples nearby, no staff interrupting the moment. The entire yacht is yours, and the pacing of the experience is entirely in your hands.
Champagne is chilled and waiting before you board, with extra bottles available aboard for the celebration afterwards. Sterling Sails handles the navigation and timing. All you need to focus on is the question.
Keeping the Proposal a Surprise
Contact us separately from your partner, share the plan, and we’ll play along perfectly on the day — navigating the boat naturally toward whatever backdrop you’ve chosen, timing the moment without it feeling staged, and giving you a subtle signal when you’re positioned exactly right.
Many guests tell their partner they booked a sunset sailing cruise, which is completely true. The surprise is the rest of it.
How to Plan It
Four steps to the question.
- 1
Book the “That Someone Special” Charter
Reserve your date on the booking page, or call (858) 999-9895 if you’d like to talk through the details first. We’ll confirm availability, walk you through the package, and make sure everything is set up exactly the way you want it before the day arrives.
- 2
Choose Your Charter Length
The 2-hour sail gives you a complete, beautiful proposal with time for the question and a champagne celebration. The 3-hour voyage adds more time on the bay, takes you further toward Point Loma, and gives you the full twilight experience if your timing aligns with sunset. Either length works beautifully.
- 3
Lock In Your Date Early
Weekend dates — especially Friday and Saturday evenings during spring and fall — book up quickly. Give yourself 4 to 6 weeks of lead time when possible. Working with a tighter window? Contact us directly and we’ll do our best to make it happen.
- 4
Show Up and Be Present
When you arrive at Harbor Island, everything is already taken care of. The boat is ready, the champagne is chilled, and Sterling Sails handles the rest. All you need to do is show up and be present for the moment.
