Whale Watching & Wildlife San Diego
A private nature charter on a quiet sailboat — sea lions up close, dolphins, seabirds, and gray whales in winter season.
San Diego Bay and the waters around Point Loma are home to a wide variety of coastal wildlife year-round. Sea lions are resident at Point Loma in large numbers, harbor seals are regularly spotted near the bay entrance, brown pelicans and cormorants are present throughout the bay, and dolphins are frequently encountered in the open water beyond the channel.
Sterling Sails offers private wildlife and whale-watching charters for up to 6 guests aboard Mojave, departing from Harbor Island and heading out through the bay toward Point Loma. Your captain provides real-time narration on the wildlife and natural features throughout the charter.

What You’ll See on a Wildlife Sailing Charter
San Diego Bay’s proximity to the Pacific flyway and the rich waters off Point Loma make it a year-round wildlife destination. On a typical Sterling Sails wildlife charter, you can expect to encounter:
- Sea lions — resident at Point Loma and reliably spotted on nearly every charter. Close enough to hear them and wonder how something that large moves so gracefully in the water
- Harbor seals — frequently seen floating near the surface or hauled out near Point Loma and the bay entrance
- Brown pelicans, cormorants, terns and other seabirds — present year-round in impressive numbers
- Common and bottlenose dolphins — often spotted in the open water beyond the bay, especially on 3 and 4-hour charters
- Gray whales — migrating past San Diego from December through April; lucky groups spot a spout or a breach in the distance on extended charters
Wildlife is wild, sightings vary day to day, and we never guarantee a specific species. What we do guarantee is that San Diego Bay puts on a remarkable natural show, and your Sterling Sails captain knows exactly where to find it.
Why a Private Sailboat Changes the Experience
Large tour vessels are loud — engines running constantly, crowds jostling for position at the rail — and the wildlife keeps its distance accordingly.
Mojave is a sailboat. When the sails are up, she moves through the water quietly — no diesel noise, no mechanical vibration. Wildlife is measurably less disturbed by sailing vessels than by motor vessels, and encounters tend to be closer and longer as a result.
A note on whales: gray whales migrate past San Diego from December through April. On 4-hour charters during migration season, we head into the corridor where sightings are most likely — but wildlife is always on its own schedule. What we can promise is an exceptional day on the water surrounded by sea lions, seabirds, and the natural beauty of San Diego Bay, regardless of what else decides to appear.
